According to the City of Santa Fe’s 2016 water report, “outdoor watering accounts for about 40 percent of the city’s annual water use”. The City of Santa Fe offers a rebate of .25 cent per gallon of water holding capacity on new cistern installations towards a homeowners future water bills. For example, a 5,000 gallon cistern will potentially save $1,250 in water bill credits through the City of Santa Fe. This bonus is rewarded to city dwellers as a way to encourage Santa Feans to invest in water catchment to reduce the need for potable water during the summer months, avoid surcharges for excess water use, and reduce water bills over all.
